Work Experience / Placement

Manchester Barton Aerodrome is pleased to announce that we will be accepting applications for work experience placements for the Operations, RFFS and Air Traffic Services teams beginning Autumn 2023.

​

APPLICATIONS FOR 2023/2024 ARE NOW CLOSED

​

This is an exciting opportunity for Barton Aerodrome to engage with the younger people in our local community and develop their professional skills for a future working in the aviation industry.

​

All students attending secondary school, sixth form / colleges and universities that live within the local community of Barton Aerodrome are invited to apply. All Royal Air Force Air Cadets of the GMW (Greater Manchester Wing) are also invited to apply. All applicants will be screened by our Work Experience Coordinator. Successful applicants at this point will then be subject to a short filter interview as part of selection. Due to the high numbers of applications we expect to receive, feedback will sadly not be available to unsuccessful candidates. Candidates can arrange work experience through their educational establishment or directly with us as a 'Self Placement'.

It is highly recommended that individuals applying have an underlying interest in aviation, airport operations, airport RFFS and air traffic services.

Please note, due to expected high demand, not all applications will be succesful. Applications may be refused at our discretion where conditions of location and interest/motivation are not met.

Scope & Goals

The scope and objectives of the works and duties expected to be covered during the work experience and placement opportunities include:

  • General airport operations: aircraft handling, aircraft fuelling, ground works and more;

  • Air traffic operations, assistive duties to the duty AFISO. Giving exposure to how an Air Traffic Service Unit operate and the importance of teamwork;

  • Exposure to RFFS operations and how the first priority in all aviation based activities is safety;

  • To assist students in making decisions about their future careers in the industry

Eligibility

  • Be aged 15+

  • Higher education students should be studying an aviation related subject;

  • Live in the local community of Barton Aerodrome (applicants must live within 10 miles of the aerodrome) OR be a member of the RAF ATC Greater Manchester Wing;​

  • Have an underlying interest in the aviation industry.
